Q. What’s the difference between an EV and an gas car?

A. The answer. Tailpipes.

EVs have no tailpipes. Nothing comes out of the back of an EV. Unlike driving an gas or diesel vehicle, EVs produce no smog, no soot, no noxious gases like nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, sulfur dioxide, carbon monoxide, particulate matter, benzene. That’s why we call them zero emissions vehicles.

What is Climate Change?

Fossil fuel burning cars emit carbon dioxide that contributes to climate change.

EVs operate on batteries. The batteries don’t burn fossil fuels. EVs do use electricity, but our electric grid is getting cleaner and cleaner. If EV owners have solar panels on their roof, then they're driving on sunshine. EVs are also much more efficient.

The batteries are made of lithium, which is an element. It is mined from the ground largely in South America, although some in Nevada.  While there is some disturbance to the ground, as in any mining activity, it is a negligible environment impact compared to the burning of fossil fuels. After an EVs battery pack is no longer useful for an EV, it can be put to additional uses as a backup source of power for the grid or a home. Almost all of a lithium battery can be recycled.


Every gas car we replace with an EV is combating climate change.

Fossil fuel burning cars, in addition to emitting carbons, emit toxins into the air we share. These toxins cause health problems for everyone as we breathe this unhealthy air, but especially for the sensitive; the very young and the elderly. For every gas car we drive, its emissions cost thousands of dollars per car each year in human health costs--visits to the ER, treatment of lung diseases, lost days of work, even premature deaths.
The good news is that we can avoid these human health problems caused by gas cars with a 100% EV cities.

Electric costs - compared to gas?
EV energy costs only ½ the cost of gas, and is much cleaner. Many utilities charge lower electric rates at night called “time of use rates” (TOU).   For example, in San Diego if you drove a Nissan Leaf 15,000 miles a year, your monthly energy cost (charging from home) would be approximately $53. If you drove a gas car (28 miles/gallon, $2.40/gallon) 15,000 miles, the monthly cost would be approximately $108.  The average Californian saves over $600 a year by driving electric. Imagine the energy cost savings over the life of the vehicle.

Maintenance costs - EVs compared to gas?
EVs have additional cost savings compared to gas vehicles because an EV has 1/10th the moving parts of a gasoline engine. EVs never need oil changes, engine spark plug tune-ups, timing and serpentine belt replacements, oil and engine air filter replacements, oxygen sensor replacements, smog checks, etc, etc, etc.  Also, EVs wear break pads less because an EV can use the electric motor to slow the car down for most of the breaking process. This type of breaking even adds electricity back into the battery as the car slows. This is called regenerative breaking and it captures much of the energy that would have been lost to friction and heat.

EVs can help California’s future grid management.

With the widespread popularity of solar in California, our grid tends to overproduce renewable energy between around noon and 5 pm. This overproduction will only get bigger with more solar. Instead of wasting this energy, EVs can be used to store the energy.  It turns our that 97% of vehicles are stationary—in your driveway, parked at work or school . When smart chargers are installed in the future, EVs can be used to store that energy while parked and charge the car with energy when it is beneficial to the grid and at the lowest cost for the consumer.

This can help us get to a 100% clean energy California much faster than without EVs.


This strategy is called Vehicle to Grid or V2Grid.
